OpenAI Reboots Its Robotics Team

Every move by OpenAI attracts industry attention! What's new this time? On January 12, 2025, OpenAI announced a restructuring of its robotics division, with the goal of developing tangible AGI intelligence. This isn't just a simple reboot; it signals a potential turning point in the field of artificial intelligence.

In fact, OpenAI's return to robotics has been hinted at for a while. Over the past year, OpenAI has been diversifying into robotics, with its internal venture fund investing in several humanoid robot companies.

Recently, OpenAI successfully partnered with Figure, helping it raise $745 million. At Figure's press conference, OpenAI hinted at the possibility of relaunching its robotics project. Just 13 days after announcing their partnership, OpenAI launched the Figure 01 robot, which went viral with a 2-minute, 35-second video demonstrating its impressive judgment and understanding.

OpenAI paused its robotics project in 2020, primarily due to a lack of sufficient training data. Over the past few years, they have achieved tremendous success in generative AI, accumulating vast amounts of data and technical experience. These technological advancements and accumulated data have laid a solid foundation for their 2025 robotics initiative.

Now, OpenAI has access to more data and more powerful computing power, enabling them to better train and optimize their robotic models. By integrating advanced AI technology with real-world robotics, OpenAI is poised not only to achieve the goal of AGI but also to secure a significant share of the robotics market.
